Laser hair removal Face and body

Laser hair removal

The laser is perhaps the world’s most advanced treatment for the effective removal of body hair. You probably know that just about your entire body is covered with some hair and when darker, thicker hair grows in places you do not like or expect, you can consider hair removal by laser. The traditional remedies for unwanted hair, like plucking, shaving, waxing or chemical depilatories, are often painful, usually messy, and are all temporary.

Then there is electrolysis which is popular and effective but can be painful and slow. An electric current passes through a needle to destroy each individual hair’s root ability to grow. Typically taking months of regular visits just for small areas like the upper lip. Risks can include electrical shock, infection and scarring or pitting. There is an effective solution! The laser is the state-of-the-art system specially designed to remove unwanted hair much faster and more efficiently than electrolysis.

A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light and different types of laser produce different colours. The colour of a lasers light is the key to its effectiveness and the pigment located in the hair follicles absorbs the light coming from the laser. Pulsing for a fraction of a second, just enough to vaporise the pigment, the laser disables several follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede re-growth. On average, between six to eight hair reduction treatments are needed to give you smooth, hair-free skin. In any area, hairs actively growing are most affected by laser, while hairs that are regressing or dormant will be less affected and could warrant additional treatments. Afterwards you may experience what appears to be the re-growth of hair where in fact, this is hair being shed as a result of the treatment and you should not wax or pluck at this stage, although shaving is acceptable.

The laser takes seconds to treat an area that would take over an hour with electrolysis and unlike some other systems, it is a proven, safe and effective treatment for every part of the body, suitable even for highly sensitive areas such as the nipples, the bikini line and full pubic.Hair’s active re-growth phase is called anagen and during anagen, the hair contains an abundance of melanin. Catagen is the regression phase when the lower part of the hair stops growing but is not shed, and the follicle is reabsorbed. The resting phase is called telogen, when the old hair falls out in preparation for the development of new hair.

Elite Patient Care Instructions

Precautions Before and After Laser Treatment

  • The area being treated cannot be exposed to the sun or sunbed. For 1064 nm wavelength
treatment, avoid sun or sunbed exposure for 2 weeks prior, during, and four weeks after
treatment. For 755 nm wavelength treatment, avoid sun or sunbed exposure for at least 4 – 6
weeks prior, during and at least 4 – 6 weeks after final treatment. A broad-spectrum
(UVA/UVB) sunscreen of SPF 30 or preferably a total sunblock of SPF 50 should be applied
    whenever exposed to the sun.
  • For laser hair removal, you must avoid plucking, waxing or bleaching hair for 6 weeks prior
to treatment. Please shave the area to be treated the day or night before your appointment.

During the Procedure

  • Safety considerations are important during the laser procedure. Protective eyewear will be
worn by the patient and all personnel in the laser room during the procedure to reduce the
chance of damage to the retina.
  • A SmartCool chilled-air cooling device will be used with the laser to minimize epidermal
damage and provide patient comfort. The use of topical anesthesia is optional.

Post-operative Skin Care

  • Immediately following treatment, the area may show a slight erythema with some swelling.
    Blistering may occur.
  • For laser hair removal, treated hairs will exfoliate or push out in approximately 2 – 3 weeks.
  • During the healing phase, the area must be treated delicately. Do not rub, scratch, or pick. If
a crust develops, let it fall off on its own.
  • Apply a thin layer of aloe vera ointment to the treated area several times a day to keep area
moist. Do not scrub the area, pat the area dry. Do not shave over the area if swelling,
    crusting or scabbing is present.
  • If swelling occurs, apply ice. Wrap the ice in a soft cloth. Discomfort or stinging may be
    relieved with Paracetamol.
  • If makeup is allowed, it must be applied and removed delicately. Excess rubbing can open
treated area increasing the chance of scarring.
  • Avoid sports and/or strenuous exercises for 2–3 days following treatment for hair removal
and 7–10 days for veins. Walking is encouraged.
  • Avoid very hot baths / showers / steam baths or sauna
  • Avoid swimming in strong chlorinated water for 2-3 days
  • Don’t use bleaching creams, or perfumed products for 24-48 hrs / avoid exfoliating or peels
for 1 week / try to avoid wearing tight clothing for 2-3 days
  • In case of signs of infection (pus, tenderness, fever), contact the clinic immediately.

Post-treatment skin care instructions must be followed to prevent any complications.
Please contact the clinic with questions or concerns regarding your treatment.
